What are up and over garage doors?

An up and over garage door is a single rigid panel that pivots outwards and upwards into the garage roof space when it opens. It runs on either canopy gear, where roughly a third of the door sits outside the opening when fully raised, or retractable gear, where the whole panel slides back inside on horizontal tracks.

How much do up and over garage doors cost?

Our guide price is £550–£1,600 including VAT. Where a door is fitted, that includes removing and disposing of the old door. The final price depends on size, finish, whether you want it electric or insulated, and the condition of the opening, and is fixed in writing after survey.

Options to choose from

Canopy gear

The simplest mechanism with no horizontal tracks. It suits garages with limited side room, but you need a clear strip of drive in front while it swings.

Retractable gear

The panel travels fully inside on tracks, giving more drive-through height. It needs more headroom and a deeper garage than canopy gear.

Steel, GRP or timber panels

Ribbed, Georgian, cathedral and vertical-board designs in galvanised steel, glass-reinforced plastic or timber.

Manual or electric

Every door can be supplied with a lock and handle, or with a ceiling-mounted operator and remote handsets.

Questions about up and over garage doors

How much drive space does an up and over door need?

A canopy door swings out by around a third of its height as it opens, so a car parked tight to the door will block it. Retractable doors swing out less. We measure this at survey.

Can an up and over door be motorised later?

Yes. Retractable doors take a standard rail-mounted operator. Canopy doors need a bow arm fitting kit, which we supply with the motor.

Do you take the old door away?

Yes. Removal and disposal of the old door and frame is included in every fitted price.
